The Zoom CEO is the latest executive to embrace artificial intelligence in corporate communication, using a digital replica of himself to address stakeholders. Powered by Zoom Clips, the company’s asynchronous video tool, the avatar delivered a polished message complete with voice cloning and synchronized lip movements. The technology allows users to record a short calibration video, type in a script, and let the AI handle the rest.
“I am proud to be among the first CEOs to use an avatar in an earnings call,” Yuan’s avatar said. “It is just one example of how Zoom is pushing the boundaries of communication and collaboration.”
Yuan also assured viewers that the company is taking trust and safety seriously. “We have built in strong safeguards to prevent misuse, protect user identity, and ensure avatars are used responsibly.”
Still, the presentation left some viewers slightly unsettled. While the frozen frame of the avatar could easily pass for the real CEO, the moment the video played, subtle imperfections gave it away. The blinking appeared robotic, and the mouth’s movement lacked natural flow, hinting at the digital wizardry behind the screen.
The tool behind the avatar, Zoom’s Custom AI Companion, launched in April 2025. It’s now available to all Zoom Workplace users and can also be purchased separately. Beyond earnings calls, the company envisions broader use of the feature for corporate communication, training, and asynchronous updates.
Yuan’s virtual appearance mirrors a similar move by Klarna CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski, who also relied on an AI version of himself to present earnings earlier this year. Klarna has leaned heavily into AI to streamline operations and reduce costs, though Siemiatkowski has openly acknowledged that AI-run customer service still lags behind human interaction.
The growing adoption of AI avatars in high-stakes settings like earnings calls signals a shift in how top executives engage with their audiences. While some applaud the efficiency and innovation, others worry it may erode authenticity and accountability in corporate leadership.
