The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s approval of four additional divisions for the Nigerian Army, describing the move as a significant step towards strengthening the country’s security framework.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the governors said the creation of the new divisions marks the largest expansion of the Nigerian Army in recent history.
According to the forum, the development demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing the protection of lives and property across the country.
The governors also welcomed the President’s approval for the recruitment of 28,000 additional military personnel and the acquisition of more military equipment, noting that the measures would boost the fight against terrorism, banditry, and other security threats.
They expressed confidence that the expansion would improve the operational capacity of the military and strengthen ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity nationwide.
The NGF reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Federal Government on security and other national development priorities.
The forum also called on Nigerians to support security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could help improve safety and security across the country.
President Tinubu had recently approved the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions, alongside the recruitment of 28,000 new personnel, as part of efforts to decentralise military command, strengthen border security, and improve responses to emerging security challenges.
Under the new arrangement, divisional headquarters will be established in Makurdi, Ilorin, Jalingo, and Benin City, with implementation expected to be completed in phases between September and December 2026.
