More than 600 people have been killed and over 65,000 displaced in a series of deadly attacks by suspected herdsmen on the Mwaghavul ethnic group in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State over the last two years.
The National President of the Mwaghavul Youth Movement, Kyesmang Yusuf, made the revelation on Friday, stating that the violence has led to the destruction of 6,111 houses and the sacking of 30 villages.
“These unprovoked attacks have turned our communities into graveyards,” Yusuf said. “The terrorists have neither shown remorse nor any regard for human life. They continue to ambush and kill our people on their farms and in the streets.”
Yusuf described the situation as a “coordinated genocide” and condemned the continued silence and inaction in the face of the atrocities. He also raised concerns over fresh threats, which he claimed suggest more attacks are being planned.
“The Mwaghavul nation has coexisted peacefully with others for decades,” he noted. “But since April 13, 2023, Fulani terrorists have deliberately chosen violence. Conflict is normal, but never at this scale of cruelty.”
He called on the government to act immediately by providing security, investigating the incidents, and ensuring the prosecution of those responsible.
He also appealed to the Nigerian Army to probe the recent destruction of farmlands in Mangu and its environs and ensure the safety of lives and properties in the region.
Mangu, alongside Bokkos and Barkin Ladi, has been one of the worst-hit areas in the renewed violence that continues to trouble Plateau State.
