Nigerian Scientist Champions Biobutanol as a Renewable Energy Game Changer

A Nigerian scientist in the diaspora, Yusuf Owolabi, an MSc graduate from the University of Chester, UK, has emphasized the need to expand renewable energy in Nigeria by tapping into the potential of biobutanol, a biofuel derived from agricultural waste.

As the global demand for sustainable energy grows, Owolabi highlights biobutanol as a promising alternative to fossil fuels, given its higher energy density and cleaner combustion compared to bioethanol.

His review article, “Can Microorganisms Produce Biobutanol after Agricultural Wastes Pretreatment?” published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biological Science Archive on December 2, 2024, explores innovative solutions to improve biobutanol production refficiency.

Owolabi’s research focuses on using lignocellulosic biomass, non-edible agricultural waste, as a feedstock for biobutanol. He stresses the need for effective pre-treatment techniques, such as mechanical, chemical, and microbiological methods, to enhance sugar accessibility for microbial fermentation.

He also proposes advanced gas stripping recovery systems to counteract the toxicity of biobutanol to microorganisms, a major challenge in production.

Advocating for continued research, Owolabi supports exploring genetically engineered microbes and enzyme-mediated detoxification to improve biobutanol yield. He believes that with advancements in fermentation technology, biobutanol could become a viable renewable energy source, reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Beyond his research, Owolabi is dedicated to mentoring young scientists and contributing to global efforts for sustainable energy. His passion for biotechnology and environmental sustainability positions him as a key advocate for a greener future.
