The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has condemned the recent protest by some Ghanaians demanding the deportation of Nigerians, warning against generalising all Nigerians as criminals.
In a statement on Tuesday, NIDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, reacted to a viral video showing demonstrators in Ghana accusing Nigerians of criminal activities and calling for their expulsion from the country.
Dabiri-Erewa described the protest and its messaging as “unfair and dangerous,” emphasizing that while a few individuals may engage in illegal acts, the vast majority of Nigerians in Ghana are peaceful, law-abiding, and contributing positively to their host communities.
“Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves,” she said. “Those involved in wrongdoing should be identified and sanctioned, but collective condemnation of an entire nationality is unjust.”
She also urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and avoid retaliation, assuring them that the matter is being handled diplomatically at the highest levels between both countries.
Dabiri-Erewa debunked rumours circulating on social media that Nigerian shops and properties were being destroyed in Ghana, stating that no credible evidence supports such claims. She cautioned against sharing inciting content, which could worsen the situation.
She commended the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners, as well as the Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, for proactively engaging with Ghanaian authorities to maintain peace and stability between the two West African nations.
