_Commends University Management’s Open-Door Policy and Commitment to Students’ Welfare_
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS Kwara State Axis, has met with the Management of the University of Ilorin over concerns about an alleged increase in private hostel accommodation fees on campus.
The delegation, led by Chairman, Comr. Yusuf Abdulquadir Eleburuke, paid the courtesy and fact-finding visit on Monday following a viral social media report on the fee hike.
The team was received on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, by the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Alex Morenikeji Akanmu.
Dr. Akanmu explained that the affected hostels are privately owned but regulated by the University. He said hostel operators had proposed a nearly 100% increase, but the proposal was rejected by the University Management after negotiations.
He noted that accommodation fees are reviewed every three academic sessions due to inflation and rising operational costs. Following discussions, both parties agreed to a 30% increase. The new approved rates are:
– *Room of 2*: ₦255,000
– *Room of 3*: ₦234,000
– *Room of 4*: ₦204,000
The Dean added that the ₦36,400 utility charge covers a 10-month session, while the caution fee remains refundable.
He further stated that approval was conditional on operators upgrading facilities and providing alternative power such as solar.
Comr. Eleburuke commended the University Management for its open-door policy and commitment to student welfare. NANS also urged media practitioners to verify information before publication, while appreciating Ajibare Talks for raising the issue which led to clarity.
The Association called for more private investment in student housing to expand capacity and make accommodation more affordable.
