Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for a severe case of gastroenteritis, the Spanish club confirmed on Thursday.
The 26-year-old Frenchman was earlier admitted to hospital following a bout of acute stomach illness, which ruled him out of Madrid’s FIFA Club World Cup opener against Saudi side Al-Hilal on Tuesday—a match that ended in a 1-1 draw.
In an update later in the day, Real Madrid announced that Mbappé had returned to the team’s base in Palm Beach, Florida, where he would continue his recovery under medical supervision and gradually reintegrate into team activities.
Gastroenteritis, commonly known as stomach flu, causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines, leading to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever.
Madrid will hope to have their star forward back in shape as they prepare for their next Club World Cup clash against Mexican side Pachuca on Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina, before facing Austria’s Salzburg on June 26 in Philadelphia.
The Club World Cup is Real Madrid’s first competitive outing under new head coach Xabi Alonso, who took over from Carlo Ancelotti at the end of last season.
Mbappé had a standout debut season for Los Blancos, netting 43 goals in 56 appearances. He claimed the European Golden Boot and helped Madrid lift both the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup, though the club narrowly missed out on the La Liga title and were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals by Arsenal.
