French football is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures, Bernard Lacombe, who has passed away at the age of 72.
The former striker, celebrated for his immense contribution to clubs such as Olympique Lyonnais, Bordeaux, and the French national team, died on Tuesday, with Lyon confirming his passing in a heartfelt tribute.
“It is with great sadness that we learned this Tuesday evening of the death of Bernard Lacombe,” the club posted. “Farewell Bernard, you were our legend, the greatest of all.”
Lacombe’s legacy spans nearly two decades of elite football. He is remembered for being a key figure in France’s Euro 1984-winning squad, and for scoring the fastest goal by a French player at a FIFA World Cup, netting after just 30 seconds against Italy in 1978.
Over his prolific 18-year career, Lacombe amassed an astonishing 304 goals in 592 appearances—a record that places him among France’s greatest forwards. He also scored 12 goals in 38 caps for Les Bleus.
Following his retirement in 1987, Lacombe transitioned into coaching and football management. He managed Lyon between 1996 and 2000 and later played a key strategic role behind the scenes as the club rose to domestic dominance in the 2000s.
FFF President Philippe Diallo paid tribute to the fallen legend, describing him as “one of the greatest strikers in the history of French football.”
“He made his mark on the glorious history of Lyon, Saint-Étienne, and Bordeaux. His goals helped establish Les Bleus on the international stage,” Diallo said in a statement. “With Jean-Michel Aulas, he transformed OL into a successful club.”
Lacombe’s name is eternally etched in the annals of French football—not just for his on-field brilliance but for his enduring loyalty and service to his beloved Lyon.
The French Football Federation (FFF) has announced plans to honor Lacombe’s memory in an official tribute, with condolences pouring in from across the football world.
