The Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe has expressed concern over the delays experienced by students sitting for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across the state.
Dr. Olohungbebe voiced his concerns during an on-the-spot assessment visit to several schools across Moro, Ilorin East, Ilorin South, and Ilorin West Local Government Areas on Wednesday. He described the disruption, which affected the English Language papers, as “regrettable,” citing the late arrival of examination materials as the cause of the delay.
The commissioner called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to put in place better logistics and strategies to prevent a recurrence of such incidents in future exams.
Despite the setback, Dr. Olohungbebe commended students, teachers, and parents for their resilience, patience, and discipline in the face of the delay. He praised their orderly conduct, noting that it helped maintain calm and ensured the exams proceeded once the materials arrived.
Schools visited during the tour included Government Day Secondary School, Shao (Moro LGA); Army Day Secondary School, Sobi; Government Day Secondary School, Karuma; Government Day Secondary School, Oja- Gbooro; Al-Mumeen International School (Ilorin East LGA); Government Day Secondary School, Oke-Kere (Ilorin South LGA); Ansarul Islam Secondary School; and College of Arabic and Islamic Studies Secondary School, Ilorin (Ilorin West LGA).
The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to quality education and its readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure smooth conduct of future examinations.
