Chrome Hits Speed Milestone, Faces Scrutiny Over Memory Use

Google recently announced that its Chrome browser is now “faster than ever,” boasting its highest score yet on the new Speedometer 3.0 benchmark. The company says Chrome’s speed has improved by roughly 10 percent since August 2024—a gain that, in theory, could save users millions of hours annually while loading or interacting with web applications.

These performance gains stem from a series of under-the-hood enhancements. Google cites improved memory layouts, more efficient string processing via updated hashing algorithms, and refinements to Chrome’s Blink rendering engine—particularly in CSS styling and font rendering—as key drivers of the browser’s improved responsiveness.

But while faster speeds are welcome, they don’t tell the whole story.

Chrome’s reputation as a memory-hungry browser still looms large. Despite Google’s ongoing efforts to reduce system strain, users continue to report excessive RAM consumption, especially during heavy tab usage or when extensions are enabled. On Reddit, a frequent sounding board for tech users, one commenter noted that even a single Chrome tab was using as much as six gigabytes of RAM after last year’s performance update—leading to sluggish system behavior or outright slowdowns.

In an attempt to address these concerns, Google has rolled out Memory Saver and Energy Saver features aimed at reducing resource usage and extending battery life, particularly on laptops. These tools suspend inactive tabs and throttle background processes to conserve memory and power. While helpful, critics argue they don’t go far enough.

TechRadar, for instance, notes that these features are welcome but incomplete, especially for users on older or lower-spec devices. Chrome still tends to strain systems with limited memory, and many feel that performance gains in speed aren’t necessarily translating into smoother real-world experiences—especially when juggling multiple web apps.

This brings into focus the ongoing challenge facing all browser developers: how to deliver faster, more responsive browsing without compromising system efficiency. As web applications become more sophisticated, browsers need to strike a delicate balance between power and restraint—a balance that isn’t always easy to maintain.

For some users, the search for that balance has led them to explore alternatives. Browsers like Mozilla Firefox and Brave have seen a modest uptick in adoption, thanks in part to their lower memory footprints and better background tab management. Both also emphasize privacy and customization—features increasingly valued by users weary of Chrome’s perceived bloat and tracking practices.

In the end, while Chrome’s speed leap is a noteworthy milestone, speed alone may not be enough to win over frustrated users. Memory management, battery efficiency, and device compatibility continue to shape the browser experience. Until Chrome delivers tangible improvements on those fronts, its dominance in market share may be tempered by growing interest in leaner, more efficient competitors.
