Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of England U-21 international Jamie Bynoe-Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, in a deal reportedly worth up to €65 million (£55 million), according to Sky Sports on Saturday.
The 20-year-old winger, who previously had a brief spell in Chelsea’s academy during his youth, is set to return to West London following an impressive run with the German Bundesliga side. Gittens later joined Manchester City’s youth setup before sealing a move to Dortmund in 2022.
The young forward enjoyed a breakout campaign last season, registering 12 goals across the Bundesliga and Champions League, and 17 in total from 107 appearances for the German club. His performances caught the attention of several European heavyweights, but it is Chelsea who have won the race for his signature.
Both Chelsea and Dortmund are currently participating in the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, where the final stages of the deal are understood to have been concluded.
The Blues turned to Gittens to strengthen their flanks after opting not to make Jadon Sancho’s loan from Manchester United permanent. In addition, Mykhailo Mudryk remains provisionally suspended by the English FA after a failed drugs test, leaving a gap in the squad’s attacking options.
Gittens is set to become Chelsea’s fourth summer signing under new manager Enzo Maresca, following the arrivals of striker Liam Delap, midfielder Dario Essugo, and defender Mamadou Sarr.
Chelsea have also secured the future signing of Palmeiras’ teenage sensation, Estevao Willian, who will join the club after his commitments at the Club World Cup.
The West London side are pressing ahead with a youthful recruitment strategy as they look to rebuild their squad with long-term potential.
