Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has called on residents to embrace sports as a powerful tool for promoting peace, unity, health, and social inclusion.
Speaking through his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, at the 2025 Olympic Day celebration held in Benin on Saturday, Governor Okpebholo said sports offer more than just physical benefits — they serve as a driving force for societal development.
“Olympic Day serves as an ideal occasion to move,” he said. “Engaging in sport fortifies both our mind and body, promotes robust health and well-being, and fuels our aspirations.”
He added that sports can foster social harmony and drive national progress, highlighting the Olympic motto: “Faster, Higher, Stronger—Together,” as a symbol of unity and shared dreams.
Also speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of the Edo Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, officially flagged off the Olympic Day Run, describing it as a celebration of excellence, friendship, and respect.
“This run is not about winning,” Enabulele said. “It’s about participation, being active, and coming together as a community. Your presence here is a testament to your commitment to health, sportsmanship, and unity.”
He applauded the turnout and expressed gratitude to partners, sponsors, volunteers, and organisers whose contributions ensured the success of the event.
The Olympic Day Run — organised by the Edo State Sports Commission — saw enthusiastic participation from residents, athletes, schoolchildren, and government officials.
The route began and ended at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, covering key roads including Stadium Road, Ekhuan Road, Ring Road, Plymouth Road, and Akenzua Road.
The event was part of a global celebration marking the birth of the modern Olympic movement, inspired by French educator Pierre de Coubertin.
With a vibrant atmosphere and wide community participation, the run underscored the enduring message of the Olympic spirit — unity through sport.
