IESU Electoral Controversy: Petition Filed Against Zulkarnain Abdulrahman Olaniyi As National President

A petition has been filed with the Electoral Committee and National Executive Council of the Ilorin Emirate Students’ Union (IESU) challenging the eligibility of Zulkarnain Abdulrahman Olaniyi, also known as Al-Opolowy, to contest for the position of National President. Al-Opolowy, a student of Al-Hikmah University, who is reportedly in his final semester with less than two months left to graduate.

The petitioner who seek anonymity argues that Al-Opolowy’s candidacy violates the IESU National Constitution, which stipulates that candidates for national positions must have at least one section remaining in their academic program at the time of election. This requirement aims to ensure continuity, accountability, and effective representation by elected officers who will remain bona fide students throughout their tenure.

The petitioner calls on the Electoral Committee and relevant constitutional bodies to:
– Disqualify Al-Opolowy: Immediately disqualify Zulkarnain Abdulrahman Olaniyi from contesting for the position of National President due to his ineligibility.
– Adhere to Constitutional Provisions: Ensure strict adherence to the constitutional provisions guiding eligibility for all aspirants.
• Uphold Integrity and Values: Uphold the integrity and values of the Ilorin Emirate Students’ Union.

According to Al-Hikmah University’s 2020/2021 graduating list, a student named Abdulrahman Zulqarnaini graduated with a B.A. (Honours) in Islamic Studies. Although the petition does not specify the current academic session, it highlights concerns about Al-Opolowy’s eligibility based on the IESU constitution .

If the petition is upheld, Al-Opolowy’s disqualification could impact the electoral landscape and potentially alter the course of the IESU’s leadership election. The outcome will likely have significant implications for the union’s future and its members.
