The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revoked the licences of 574 secondary schools across Nigeria for their involvement in examination malpractice.
These schools have been barred from conducting any WAEC examinations, including the upcoming 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 24, 2025.
Dr. Amos Dangut, WAEC’s Head of National Office, disclosed this during a press briefing held at the Council’s headquarters in Lagos on Thursday.
He stated that the names of the delisted schools have been submitted to the Federal Government and other relevant examining bodies. According to him, these schools are no longer recognized as WAEC examination centres due to their breach of examination regulations.
The 2025 WASSCE will run from April 24 to June 20, and a total of 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools have registered. Of these candidates, 979,228 are male, while 994,025 are female. This represents a growth of over 158,000 candidates compared to the previous year’s registration.
To enhance examination integrity and reduce malpractice, WAEC has introduced several innovations.
One major change is the implementation of the maiden Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CB-WASSCE) for school candidates.
This move is aimed at leveraging modern Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to improve exam delivery and monitoring.
In addition, WAEC has adopted a new test administration strategy where no two candidates will receive the same set of questions for each number, a method designed to curb cheating and protect the credibility of the examination process.
Dr. Dangut emphasized that these efforts align with the Federal Ministry of Education’s vision to uphold academic standards and moral integrity across Nigerian schools, ensuring fair and credible assessments for all candidates.
