Residents of Ifelagba community in Sobi, Alagbado, Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State have raised alarm over an oil spillage contaminating four wells and a borehole.
In response, Hon. Damilola Yusuf Adelodun, Commissioner for Business, Innovation, and Technology, led a delegation alongside the Ministry of Environment on an urgent inspection.
She assured residents of the state government’s swift action and emphasized the need for geological and environmental assessments to determine the scope of contamination, health risks, and potential for safe resource exploration.
Hon. Damilola further pledged to involve relevant federal agencies for a technical evaluation and responsible future development of the affected area.
Representing the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Buge, the Head of Pollution Control Department, Alabelewe Saadudeen, committed to a thorough investigation to determine the exact source and nature of the spillage.
Chairman of Ifelagba community, Alhaji Ajadi AbdulAzeez, expressed gratitude for the government’s prompt response. He noted that the discovery of oil-like substances in water sources has created water scarcity and posed health risks for residents.
In an immediate move to prevent further contamination, Hon. Damilola ordered the temporary closure of Rainoil Filling Station located along Lare-Gada, Sobi Road, Ilorin, pending investigation.
The state government reiterated its commitment to protecting public health, ensuring environmental safety, and restoring clean water access to affected residents.
