JUST IN: Tinubu signs bill for creation of federal university of environment and technology in Ogoni

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law, the Federal University of Environment and Technology Establishment Bill 2024.

The bill establishes the Federal University of Environment and Technology, Ogoni, in Rivers State.

A statement by the Presidency on X described the development as a fulfillment of the promise by Tinubu.
“Promise Kept. Assented into Law by President Bol. The Federal University of Environment and Technology (TAI) Establishment Bill 2024,” the statement read.
Over the years, Ogoni indigenes and various groups have urged different presidents to establish this university in Ogoni.

To this effect, a bill was introduced on the floor of the National Assembly, and the Senate passed it in March 2022.
The bill, however, was not assented into law until Monday.

The university will award first degrees, postgraduate degrees, and diplomas, with special emphasis on environmental technology and research.

Ogoni is an oil-rich region in the Niger Delta whose indigenes and residents have struggled with oil spills, water pollution, fishing ground contamination, and farmland degradation.
The region has also battled gas flaring from the oil extraction process, along with decreasing crop yields and fish catches.
