Tech entrepreneur and Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has unveiled a new messaging platform called Bitchat, designed to function without internet access by leveraging Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks.
Dorsey, who is also the CEO of Block, introduced the app as a secure, peer-to-peer communication tool that enables encrypted offline messaging between nearby devices. The launch is seen as a move toward building resilient, decentralized communication systems, especially in areas with limited or disrupted internet connectivity.
One of Bitchat’s standout features is its ability to operate entirely offline, forming Bluetooth clusters that pass messages between devices as users move around. This mesh-style communication can extend messaging range significantly beyond traditional Bluetooth limits.
Messages sent via Bitchat are end-to-end encrypted, stored locally, and automatically deleted after a short duration, enhancing user privacy and data protection. The app also has a feature that allows offline users to receive messages once they reconnect, ensuring continuity of communication.
By introducing Bitchat, Dorsey continues his push for digital tools that empower user privacy, decentralization, and censorship-resistant technology — a philosophy he’s long championed through his involvement with Bitcoin and blockchain-based projects.
The app is currently available for select users, with wider rollout expected soon.
