The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has cautioned officers of the Nigeria Police Force against unlawful arrests and prolonged detention of suspects.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP stressed that detaining suspects beyond legally permitted periods violates constitutional rights and undermines public trust in the police. He warned that officers who engage in such practices would face strict disciplinary measures.
Egbetokun cited Sections 34 and 35 of the Nigerian Constitution, which uphold human dignity and personal liberty, emphasizing that the police must operate within the framework of the law.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to human rights protection, urging officers to maintain professionalism, integrity, and accountability in their duties.
