The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has vowed to deploy modern technology and intelligence-led policing to enhance the security of schools across Nigeria.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on the Safe School Initiative on Monday, Egbetokun, represented by AIG Ahmed Amani, emphasized the need for proactive law enforcement and collaboration with security agencies, educators, and host communities.
He highlighted plans for training programs aimed at equipping educators and security personnel with skills to respond effectively to threats.
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, represented by Education Commissioner Ali Makoda, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to school safety through security personnel deployment and infrastructure improvements.
The forum also featured insights from the National Coordinator of the School Protection Squad, Abayomi Shogunle, who linked security challenges to the rising number of out-of-school children. He referenced the 2021 National Policy on Safety, which reported over 600 teachers killed and 19,000 displaced between 2012 and 2016.
Political analyst Prof. Kamilu Fagge urged security agencies to strengthen community partnerships for better intelligence gathering and rapid response to threats.
