At least four active National Youth Service Corps members and eight students at Gateway Polytechnic in Sapaade, Ogun State, have been taken into custody by the Lagos State Police Special Fraud Unit on suspicion of engaging in financial fraud in both Lagos and Ogun states.
According to information obtained by PUNCH Online on Monday, on January 15, 2025, PSFU agents captured two people of unknown occupation in the Sapaade area of Ogun State, in addition to the students and corps members detained during the operation.
This was disclosed by PSFU spokeswoman Eyitayo Johnson in a statement on Monday, after several student unions visited PSFU Commissioner of Police Godwin Omodeinde on January 16 for a discussion following the arrest of the accused.
Part of the statement said, “On January 16, 2025, the National Association of Nigerian Students, National Association of Polytechnic Students, Association of Southern Nigerian Students, and GAPOSA Students Union Government leaders were received in the audience by Godwin Omodeinde, the Commissioner of Police, PSFU.
“The purpose of the Student Union leaders’ visit was to discuss the arrest of 14 individuals, aged 18 to 28, in Saapade, Ogun State, on January 15, 2025.
“The arrested suspects, suspected members of an online fraud syndicate operating in Lagos and Ogun States, included four members of the NYSC Corps, eight students from Gateway Polytechnic in Ogun State, and two other individuals of unknown status who claimed to be a cobbler and an artist, respectively.”
The Commissioner of Police emphasised the significance of preserving a solid and cooperative relationship between NANS members and the Nigeria Police in response to the concerns expressed by the leaders of the Student Union.
Omodeinde also encouraged the leaders of the student body to fulfil their duty to safeguard the welfare of their members while making sure that those who engage in misconduct within their group are turned over to the police.
