Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has been handed a two-game suspension by FIFA following his red card in the Club World Cup defeat to Flamengo on Friday, June 20.
The 24-year-old was initially set to serve a one-match ban, which saw him miss Chelsea’s final group game against Tunisia’s Esperance — a match the Blues won 3-0. However, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has now extended the ban after reviewing the incident.
Jackson was sent off for a reckless studs-up challenge on Flamengo’s Ayrton Lucas, marking his second red card in four games across all competitions.
In a statement released Tuesday, FIFA said: “The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on Chelsea’s player Nicolas Jackson… a two-match suspension for breach under article 14 paragraph 1 e) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. This decision is final and binding and cannot be appealed.”
Jackson has since issued an apology on social media for the challenge. He will now miss Chelsea’s upcoming round of 16 clash against Benfica.
While a one-game suspension is standard for red cards at the tournament, FIFA reserves the right to impose a harsher punishment in cases deemed serious foul play.
