The Federal Government has commenced the training of 800 soldiers as part of a newly established 2,400-member Special Operations Forces, designed to tackle terrorism, insurgency, and transnational crimes.
The troops, drawn from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force, began their training at Camp Kabala in Jaji Military Cantonment, Kaduna, on Monday. Speaking at the launch, Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, described the initiative as a strategic move to build a highly skilled force capable of handling modern security threats.
He emphasized that the evolving nature of warfare requires a unit proficient in unconventional tactics, intelligence-driven operations, and rapid response missions. The training will equip personnel with special combat skills, counterterrorism strategies, and hostage rescue techniques.
“This initiative will serve as a critical pillar in securing national sovereignty, protecting citizens, and maintaining peace,” Abubakar said.
Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, highlighted the importance of the programme, noting that modern security challenges demand highly trained and well-coordinated forces. He praised the state-of-the-art training facility, expressing confidence in its ability to enhance military preparedness.
Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, represented by his deputy, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, commended the initiative, stressing its significance in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
The training marks the first phase of the programme, with more troops expected to undergo similar exercises in the coming months.
