After years of anticipation, football legend David Beckham has officially been knighted in King Charles III’s 2025 Birthday Honours List — a move that fans have long called for and many say was richly deserved.
The former England captain and global sports icon, who was awarded an OBE in 2003, now carries the prestigious title of Sir David Beckham in recognition of his lifetime contributions to football and humanitarian work.
Reacting to the news, Beckham said: “This is such an emotional moment for me and my family. To have played for and captained my country was the greatest honour of my life — and to now receive a knighthood is truly humbling.”
Beckham’s knighthood isn’t just about his iconic free-kicks or trophy-laden career at Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, and beyond. It also reflects his two-decade-long dedication to causes off the pitch, including his work as a UNICEF ambassador and, more recently, his involvement with The King’s Foundation.
Known for blending fame with responsibility, Beckham has spent years using his platform to spotlight children’s welfare, community development, and global sports diplomacy. Beckham wasn’t the only sports star honoured. Darts sensations Luke Littler and Luke Humphries picked up MBEs, while Olympic triathlete Alistair Brownlee received an OBE. Tennis legend Virginia Wade was awarded a CBE, and footballer Rachel Daly, part of England’s Euro 2022-winning squad, also earned an MBE.
