Startups may have the ideas, but without the right networks, many never make it past the drawing board. That’s the gap BlackCrest, a legal firm focused on tech startups, and payment giant Flutterwave are now working to close.
At the Builders Cabal Meet and Chat event held in Lagos, the two organizations launched a collaborative support network aimed at empowering African tech founders through mentorship, legal insight, and investor access. The gathering brought together founders, investors, legal professionals, policymakers, and startup operators from across the continent.
“This isn’t just another panel talk,” said Osita James, Managing Partner at BlackCrest. “It’s a space where founders can meet, talk, and learn from one another. It’s these connections that often determine whether a startup thrives or fails.”
James pointed out that while passion and ideas fuel many startups, practical knowledge, especially about fundraising and scaling, remains scarce. “Too many startups hit roadblocks because they lack real-world insight on how to raise capital or navigate legal complexities,” he said.
For BlackCrest, the effort goes beyond legal consultation. “If the ecosystem grows, we all win, founders, lawyers, investors, the entire economy,” James added.
Away from the spotlight of the main sessions, founders shared hard-earned lessons. Dare Olufumilayo, CEO of Dare.io and Extents.ai, emphasized that new entrants often get distracted by the race for funding. “Focus on building something real first. Your first customers matter more than your first investor,” he advised.
He said events like this matter because they connect new founders with experienced entrepreneurs who can share honest feedback. “Sometimes, a single conversation at the right moment can redirect a startup’s entire journey.”
Supporting that view, Titilayo Bada, Manager at Cafe One, said their co-working space is committed to providing early-stage founders with access to a creative community that levels the playing field. “You don’t need deep pockets to access inspiration and support,” she said.
