Meta has rolled out new safety features for teenage users on Messenger, making parental approval mandatory for users under 16. The move is part of a global trend among tech companies to enhance online child protection.
The newly launched “Teen Accounts” come with stricter privacy settings and parental controls, designed to create a safer space for young users. This development follows growing pressure on tech firms from regulators in the U.S. and EU to safeguard minors’ data and monitor who they interact with on social media.
Other platforms like TikTok have also faced scrutiny for their handling of child safety, with issues around content moderation leading to widespread concerns in various countries.
However, implementing similar safety protocols in Africa presents significant challenges. Across the continent, digital literacy varies, and regulatory frameworks remain weak or underdeveloped. In Nigeria, for example, while there is a Child Rights Act, it lacks strong enforcement mechanisms for online activity. Parents often share devices with their children and may not have the awareness or technical know-how to use available safety features.
Even when policies exist, enforcement can be difficult. In Kenya, TikTok was recently criticized for failing to moderate harmful content targeting teens, sparking national debates about social media regulation.
For Africa’s large and growing population of connected youth, many of whom access social media before age 13—the real question is not just whether tech platforms are doing enough, but whether their policies are suitable for environments with limited infrastructure and oversight.
Meta previously introduced similar teen safety features on Instagram in 2024. While the Messenger update is a step in the right direction, its success in Africa will depend heavily on local partnerships, increased public awareness, and stronger, more enforceable policies to protect young users online.
