President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the creation of over 8,800 new Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) nationwide. This decision forms part of a broader Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure.
Vice President Kashim Shettima made the announcement during the commissioning of the Sulaiman Adebola Adegunwa Trauma Centre in Sagamu, Ogun State, on Saturday.
The initiative not only involves building new PHCs but also focuses on upgrading tertiary hospitals to better manage trauma, cancer treatments, and infectious diseases.
Highlighting the scope of the challenge, Shettima said the federal government is committed to healthcare reform but cannot meet the nation’s needs alone. He called for stronger participation from the private sector in building a sustainable healthcare system.
“The government cannot shoulder this burden by itself,” Shettima emphasized, stressing the importance of collaboration with private investors and philanthropists.
He described the newly opened trauma centre as a crucial asset to Nigeria’s emergency medical services, symbolizing the administration’s commitment to saving lives.
Shettima further noted that the trauma facility stands as a model of private sector support, praising the Adegunwa family for their contribution.
“This centre is more than a birthday gift—it is a gift to humanity. A place of healing for the injured and a source of hope for struggling families,” he said.
