The Argentine football community is in mourning following the sudden death of Camilo Nuin, an 18-year-old midfielder for Buenos Aires-based club San Telmo, who passed away on Wednesday evening after undergoing knee surgery.
Nuin, who had previously come through the youth systems at Boca Juniors and Independiente, was undergoing a procedure to treat meniscal and cruciate ligament injuries — a surgery commonly performed on athletes. His club confirmed the tragic news but stated that the exact cause of death remains unknown, with investigations currently underway.
In a statement, San Telmo wrote:
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Camilo Ernesto Nuin, a player in our youth and reserve divisions, who was undergoing surgery today. The club will remain closed today as a sign of mourning. We join his family, friends, and team-mates in this difficult time and remain at their disposal for anything they may need.”
President of the Argentine Football Association (AFA), Claudio Tapia, also shared his condolences on social media, writing:
“A very sad piece of news that shakes the entire football world.”
The AFA added its own tribute, extending “deep sorrow and condolences” to the family of the young player.
Camilo Nuin joined San Telmo in 2022 and had been a promising talent within their youth and reserve ranks. His untimely death has left a heartbreaking void, with tributes pouring in from across the Argentine football landscape.
