Liverpool have officially announced the blockbuster signing of German sensation Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, in a deal that breaks the British transfer record.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder completed a two-day medical on Merseyside and wrapped up his media commitments before being unveiled by the club on Friday night. The move, initially costing £100 million, could rise to £116 million with performance-related add-ons—eclipsing the previous British record held by Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández.
Leverkusen had been holding out for €150 million (£127.6m), but weeks of negotiations saw the fee brought down. Wirtz arrives after a stunning season in the Bundesliga, registering 16 goals and 15 assists in 45 appearances.
“I feel very happy and very proud. Finally, it’s done and I was waiting for a long time,” Wirtz told the club’s website. “I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. I wanted something fresh, outside the Bundesliga, and the Premier League was always my dream.”
The German international added that former Liverpool players had encouraged the move, assuring him that both the club and the league would suit his style. “I hope I can give my best. I’d like to win everything every year,” he said. “The aim is to be successful—defend the Premier League title and push for more in the Champions League.”
Wirtz is not the only fresh face at Anfield. Liverpool have also snapped up right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen in a £29.5m deal, while a £40m agreement has been reached to sign Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez, who is expected to undergo a medical next week.
The Reds are also eyeing Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guéhi as part of their summer rebuild.
