Airtel Africa has joined forces with SpaceX to roll out Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet across the continent, aiming to boost connectivity in hard-to-reach places.
The telecom giant confirmed that SpaceX has secured operational licences in nine of the 14 African countries where Airtel operates. Approvals for the remaining five are still in progress.
The partnership is expected to expand Airtel’s satellite coverage, delivering fast and reliable internet to businesses, schools, hospitals, and rural communities that currently lack access. It will also support rural cellular network coverage through satellite-powered backhaul.
Both companies say they are looking beyond internet access. They plan to collaborate further on bridging Africa’s digital divide, with SpaceX exploring ways to tap into Airtel’s local infrastructure and telecom experience.
Airtel Africa’s CEO, Sunil Taldar, said the move is part of the company’s mission to improve lives through digital inclusion.
“This partnership with SpaceX shows our commitment to advancing Africa’s digital economy. With next-gen satellite technology, no community needs to be left behind,” he said.
Chad Gibbs, SpaceX’s Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, echoed the excitement: “We’re thrilled to work with Airtel to bring Starlink to more people across Africa. Airtel has been central to Africa’s telecom growth, and this partnership is a natural fit.”
Starlink is already active in over 20 African countries, and this deal signals a major step toward reaching even more users, especially in areas where traditional infrastructure can’t go.
