Global tech giant Meta has threatened to suspend its services, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, in Nigeria, following regulatory fines exceeding $290 million slammed on the company by Nigerian authorities.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) imposed a staggering $220 million fine on Meta over alleged anti-competitive practices. This was followed by additional penalties from the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), who fined the company $37.5 million and $32.8 million, respectively, for violations related to unauthorized advertising and breaches of data privacy regulations.
A tribunal ruling in April upheld the FCCPC fine, dealing a major blow to Meta’s legal attempt to challenge the sanctions.
The company has now been given until the end of June 2025 to settle the fines or risk having its platforms restricted in Nigeria. If enforced, millions of Nigerians could lose access to vital communication and business tools provided by the platforms.
Meta, in a statement filed with court documents, expressed concern over what it described as “unrealistic regulatory demands” and cited concerns about Nigeria’s data transfer policies, including NDPC’s requirements for prior approval of cross-border data movement and mandated display of educational content on data privacy.
While no final decision has been announced, Meta’s threat has sparked growing concern among digital entrepreneurs, influencers, and small businesses who rely heavily on the platforms for visibility, engagement, and livelihood.
The Nigerian government has yet to issue an official response on whether negotiations with Meta are ongoing or if alternative platforms will be considered in the event of a service shutdown.
