Benue Community Alleges Government Abandonment Following Herdsmen Attack

On Good Friday, April 18, 2025, suspected armed herdsmen attacked worshippers in Gbagir community, Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, resulting in at least ten deaths and multiple injuries.

The assailants, reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles, ambushed the community during early morning church services, causing widespread panic and chaos.

This incident is part of a series of violent attacks in the region, highlighting ongoing security challenges in Benue State.

He confirmed the attack, explaiing that it happened in the early hours of Friday around 6:00am.

The source said community members are now conveying the corpses of the deceased to the palace of the traditional ruler, lamenting that the government has abandoned them.

According to the source:“The herdsmen invaded neighbouring Community of Chito first on Thursday, killed two people. Today (Friday), they invaded our community and killed 10 people including our women and children.

” So many other people about, 25 of them were equally wounded and we don’t know how many people are going to survive.”

The community leader lamented the repeated attacks by herdsmen, claiming that government security forces have not intervened during any of the incidents. Efforts to get a response from the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the spokesperson, CSP Catherine Anene, did not answer calls.
