The leadership of the House of Representatives on Monday joined President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock for Iftar, pledging their support for his administration and donating N705 million, half of their salaries, to the government’s humanitarian efforts.
Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the invitation and commended his engagement with the National Assembly. He described Ramadan as a time for reflection, urging Nigerians to evaluate the country’s journey, its present state, and its aspirations. Abbas called on both Christians and Muslims to use the season for prayers, seeking economic stability, improved security, and guidance for both leaders and citizens.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking on behalf of the President, emphasized the importance of unity and national development over political divisions. He urged lawmakers to approach leadership with humility and a commitment to progress. “This sacred month reminds us to choose stability over strife, collaboration over conflict, and dialogue over discord,” Shettima stated.
He highlighted the significance of Ramadan coinciding with the Lenten season, calling for deep introspection and reaffirmation of national unity. “What binds us as a nation is far greater than what divides us,” he said, commending President Tinubu’s leadership as one of vision and inclusivity.
Shettima assured Nigerians that the government’s economic policies were yielding results, stating, “The economy has turned the corner. We are now on the path to sustained economic growth, and with perseverance, we will create a Nigeria where every citizen can thrive.”
The Vice President praised Speaker Abbas and the House leadership for fostering harmony within the legislature, noting that peace and development go hand in hand. He urged the lawmakers to govern with empathy, fairness, and justice, reminding them that leadership is a trust vested in them by the people. “Leadership is not about personal gain; it is about service. It is a burden vested in us by God, tested by history, and measured by the impact we leave behind,” he added.
