Nurses under the Anambra State Government have staged a protest against poor remuneration and career stagnation, accusing their union, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), of failing to advocate for their welfare.
The aggrieved nurses, who stormed the Nurses House in Awka on Monday, decried the state’s refusal to implement the 125% Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), which has already been adopted in some states. They also expressed frustration over the indefinite suspension of a 15-day ultimatum issued to the government in December 2024.
Many nurses lamented being stuck on the same salary grade for over 13 years without promotion, with allowances such as hazard pay significantly undervalued. They also highlighted understaffing in hospitals, forcing them to work night shifts alone without security or adequate support.
In response, NANNM State Chairman Edith Onwuka denied abandoning the nurses, explaining that negotiations with the government are ongoing. She urged patience, emphasizing that strike action would only be a last resort.
Despite these assurances, the nurses remain adamant, demanding urgent implementation of the new salary structure and long-overdue promotions in line with civil service regulations.
