The family of the late General Sani Abacha has dismissed claims by former Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), that the late military ruler was responsible for annulling the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
In a statement signed by Mohammed Abacha, the family described Babangida’s claims as a distortion of historical facts, insisting that the decision to annul the election was made under IBB’s administration, where he held absolute executive powers as Head of State.
“The decision to annul the election was made under the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, who, as the then Head of State, held absolute executive powers and was solely responsible for the actions of his government,” the statement read.
The family accused Babangida of attempting to rewrite history in his recently launched autobiography, A Journey in Service, and shifting blame to Abacha, who was a senior officer but not the Commander-in-Chief at the time.
They urged Nigerians to reject revisionist narratives and ensure that the true history of Nigeria’s democratic struggle remains intact
