The United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence into its operations as part of a broader strategy to streamline government functions and reduce its workforce.
OPM Director Scott Kupor, who was appointed under the Trump administration, said the move reflects a “Silicon Valley” approach to increasing productivity and preparing for a tech-driven future.
“I view AI as probably the most significant disinflationary technology we’ve seen to date,” Kupor told reporters on Monday. “It’s not about replacing everyone’s jobs, but about increasing the efficiency of many of them and creating new opportunities along the way.”
The agency is on track to cut its workforce by nearly one-third by the end of the year, reducing staff from 3,110 to approximately 2,000, mainly through voluntary exits. The number of external contractors will also be halved, from 1,200 to about 600.
Kupor identified areas such as customer service and comment processing—particularly analyzing the tens of thousands of public responses the agency receives—as early targets for AI integration.
“It’s hard to imagine that in a few years we won’t be significantly improving tasks like comment summarization and information gathering through AI,” he said.
