President Bola Tinubu will travel to Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Sunday to attend the eighth-day prayer for the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, who died on July 13 at the age of 91.
The respected monarch, who reigned for 65 years, was buried the following day in a private Islamic ceremony. Known for his bold voice in national matters and his transformative leadership, Oba Adetona remains one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers.
Sunday’s prayer session will be held at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, drawing dignitaries from across the country, including Governor Dapo Abiodun and other prominent figures from political, business, religious, and royal institutions.
Security has been intensified across Ijebu-Ode, with officers from the Police, Army, Civil Defence, and Amotekun Corps stationed around major venues, including the stadium, the Awujale’s palace, and his private residence at Igbeba.
In preparation for the event, several markets, such as Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje, will remain closed to honour the late monarch and allow residents to pay their last respects.
During his 90th birthday and 64th coronation anniversary, President Tinubu had conferred on the Awujale one of Nigeria’s highest national honours, acknowledging his immense contributions to national unity and development.
Residents and traders in Ijebu-Ode have welcomed the President’s visit, with many describing it as a befitting tribute to a king who dedicated his life to the progress and dignity of his people.
Hotel bookings have surged ahead of the event, with many establishments reporting full occupancy as guests continue to pour into the town.
Oba Adetona is remembered for championing education, promoting good governance, and transforming Ijebuland into a centre of excellence. His legacy, according to residents, will continue to inspire future generations.
