The Oyo State Government has launched a capacity-building program for 1,950 farmers across its 33 local government areas to enhance food security and boost agricultural productivity.
Speaking at the program’s opening in Ibadan, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, highlighted the initiative’s role in creating a sustainable agricultural ecosystem. Represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Abosede Owoeye, he emphasized that the Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration recognizes farmers’ vital role in ensuring food security and economic growth.
The training covers multiple agricultural sectors:
– 660 farmers will learn pasture establishment, management, conservation, and artificial insemination.
– 300 farmers will be trained in climate-smart agriculture, focusing on high-value crop production and weed management.
– 140 young farmers will receive training in beekeeping practices.
– 100 participantswill be trained in shea butter production techniques.
– 90 farmers will learn locust bean processing methods.
– 660 youths, women, and retirees will undergo training in mushroom cultivation across all zones in the state.
Olaleye urged participants to take full advantage of the training, noting that professionals have been engaged to provide a comprehensive learning experience.
The event featured experts from the University of Ibadan, including Prof. Olusola Olorunnisomo, Dr. Adewunmi Adesina, Mr. Tunmise Olagbaju, and bee specialist Mr. Kola Ajao.
The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to equipping farmers with modern agricultural techniques to improve productivity and ensure long-term food security in Oyo State.
