NDPC Probes TikTok, Truecaller Over Alleged Data Breaches, Unveils New Compliance Guidelines

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched an investigation into alleged data breaches by TikTok and Truecaller, assessing their compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA).

As part of its efforts to strengthen data privacy enforcement, the NDPC has also introduced the Nigeria Data Protection Act – General Application and Implementation Directive (NDP Act-GAID). This directive provides detailed guidelines to help data controllers and processors align with the country’s data protection regulations.

Additionally, the commission unveiled the Standard Notice to Address Grievance (SNAG), a new mechanism that allows individuals to directly request remedial action from data controllers and processors without first involving the NDPC. This initiative aims to enhance accountability and ensure quicker resolution of data privacy concerns.

Speaking in Abuja, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, emphasized the commission’s commitment to enforcing data protection laws and ensuring that platforms operating in Nigeria adhere to the required privacy standards.
