Liverpool Football Club has pledged to pay the remainder of Diogo Jota’s contract—worth approximately £14.5 million—to his family, following the Portuguese striker’s tragic death in a car crash last Thursday, July 3.
Jota, 28, and his younger brother, Andre, lost their lives in the early hours of the morning while travelling through Spain. The news has sent shockwaves through the football community, with tributes pouring in from teammates, fans, and clubs across Europe.
The late forward, who signed a five-year contract extension with Liverpool in 2022, was earning around £140,000 per week—an annual salary of about £7.2 million. With two years left on his deal, the Merseyside club is set to pay the full outstanding amount to Jota’s family in a gesture widely praised as both generous and compassionate.
“This is more than just football,” a club insider told The Athletic. “It’s about honouring a player who gave his all to the club and standing with his family at a time of unimaginable pain.”
Jota’s death came just two weeks after his wedding to his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, with whom he shares three young children. The couple had been together since their teenage years.
Signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, Jota quickly became a key figure in Jurgen Klopp’s attack, known for his sharp instincts and tireless work rate. Over his four seasons at Anfield, he made 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.
