The Director of Research at the Centre for Population and Environmental Development, Dr. Johnson Dudu, has raised concerns over the impact of insecurity on women farmers in Nigeria’s North-East, warning that it poses a threat to food sufficiency in the country.
Speaking at a policy workshop in Gombe on Friday, themed “Empowerment of Women in Pastoralism and Agriculture in Nigeria’s Sahel Region,” Dudu lamented that many women could no longer access their farms safely due to security challenges in the region.
“Women need security, especially when going to their farms. Many of them cannot farm without protection, putting food production in jeopardy,” he stated.
The workshop was organized with support from Cowater International, the International Development Research Centre, and the Supporting Pastoralism and Agriculture in Recurrent and Protracted Crises program, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.
Dudu called for urgent improvements in the region’s security architecture to enable women to farm freely, emphasizing that strengthening security would be crucial to ensuring food sufficiency in Nigeria.
