The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to Friday for the continuation of proceedings and cross-examination of the Federal Government’s witness.
Justice James Omotosho made the adjournment on Tuesday after the Federal Government’s counsel, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, completed leading the first prosecution witness, a Department of State Services (DSS) operative identified as PWAAA, in evidence.
The witness, who testified behind a protective shield, presented a series of documentary evidence, including a video recording of Kanu’s interrogation and his written statement dated October 15, 2015. The documents were admitted into evidence after the defence, led by Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, raised no objection.
In the statements, Kanu confirmed founding Radio Biafra in London and disclosed that it was not registered with Nigeria’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), as he believed such registration was unnecessary. He reiterated his position as a non-violent freedom fighter advocating for the emancipation of the South East, South South, and parts of Benue and Kogi States, asserting that freedom fighting is a fundamental right.
During the session, four suitcases recovered from Kanu’s hotel room at Golden Tulip Hotel, Lagos, in 2015 were brought into court. The contents, primarily radio equipment and personal items, were also admitted as exhibits without objection.
The trial is scheduled to resume on Friday, where the defence team is expected to cross-examine the prosecution witness.(NAN)
