Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong says Nigeria’s national team is fully locked in on two major goals — lifting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an interview granted in Ar Rass to the Saudi Pro League, where he currently plays, the central defender described leading the team as a deep honour and a big responsibility.
“It’s something very special for me to be captain,” Troost-Ekong said. “Nigeria is a massive football nation that produces talent on an incredible scale. But it’s also a nation that has probably underperformed over the years, considering the level of talent we have.”
He acknowledged the weight of expectations but also expressed belief in the current squad, which includes a blend of young talent and experienced players.
“I’m really enjoying the experience and trying to contribute the best I can,” he added. “With the group of players we have now—who are extremely talented—our focus is clear: to win the next AFCON and qualify for the 2026 World Cup.”
The former Watford defender reflected on Nigeria’s narrow miss at the last AFCON and said the setback has only made the team more determined.
“We came very close at the last AFCON, and that’s something we’ve all learned from. Now, as captain, the mission feels even more meaningful,” he said.
With the stakes rising ahead of major international competitions, Troost-Ekong’s comments are likely to energize fans and signal the Super Eagles’ renewed determination to deliver on their potential.
