President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona Ogbagba II, who passed on after more than 65 years on the throne.
In a heartfelt tribute released on Sunday, President Tinubu said the monarch’s passing came just hours after the loss of another respected figure, former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as a painful double tragedy.
Speaking at the eighth-day Fidau prayers in Ijebu-Ode, the President described Oba Adetona as more than a traditional ruler, calling him a confidant, guide, and voice of truth. He praised the late monarch’s legacy of leadership, marked by integrity, courage, and a deep sense of duty to his people.
“For over six decades, Kabiyesi ruled with rare dignity and candour,” the President said. “He put the welfare of the people above all else and remained a steady presence in the lives of those who sought his wisdom.”
Tinubu noted that Oba Adetona’s death had created a significant void within the traditional institution of Yorubaland and the country as a whole. He offered prayers for the late monarch, asking Almighty Allah to grant him Aljannah Firdaus and comfort those in mourning.
Oba Sikiru Adetona, one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs, was widely respected for his outspoken nature, reform-minded leadership, and deep connection to his people.
