Gunmen have reportedly killed a commercial motorcycle rider in the Agingi community, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
According to journalists, the victim, identified as Monday Mbah, was ambushed and murdered near the gate of the Rukuba Barracks in the Agingi Kisaloi area on Monday evening.
A resident, Mary Hassan, confirmed the incident to journalists in Jos on Tuesday, stating that Mbah was attacked around 7 p.m. while riding his motorcycle. The assailants also made away with the motorcycle after the attack.
Hassan said, “Monday Mbah was ambushed and killed near the gate of the Rukuba Barracks in the Agingi Kisaloi area.
“His motorcycle was stolen afterwards. Mbah was an okada rider, and the unfortunate incident happened around 7 pm yesterday (Monday) evening. Residents said they heard the gunshot.” Hassan said .
When journalists tried to contact the spokesman for the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, he was not immediately available as his mobile phone indicated that it was switched off. However, sources at the police headquarters said the victim’s corpse had been evacuated from the scene.
“We are aware of the unfortunate incident. But the corpse is no longer there, “the source said.
This incident is the latest in a string of violent attacks in Plateau State, which has been plagued by insecurity and bloodshed in recent times. In April, over 50 people were killed in a brutal attack on the Irigwe community in Zikke, Kwall District of Bassa Local Government Area.
The Plateau State Government has been working to address the security challenges in the state, with Governor Caleb Mutfwang vowing to take measures to restore peace and prevent future attacks.
The government has deployed security personnel to vulnerable communities and restricted night transportation of cattle by vehicle after 7 pm.
