Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, on Monday led a protest to the Force Headquarters in Abuja to demand better welfare and pension reforms for both serving and retired police officers.
The demonstration, held in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Retired Police Officers, sought to push for the immediate removal of police personnel from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), which the protesters described as exploitative and dehumanising.
Initially denied access to the Force Headquarters, the demonstrators were later escorted by police officers as they marched toward the National Assembly complex to further press their demands.
The protesters held placards with messages such as “Decent Salaries Now,” “End Police Slavery,” “Pensions for Police Officers,” “Dignity for Those in Uniform,” and “CPS is a Death Sentence.”
Speaking on behalf of the demonstrators, some retired officers decried what they described as the government’s long-standing neglect of their welfare. They vowed to sustain the protest until lawmakers take concrete steps to address the pension crisis in the police force.
