Senate Debunks New State Creation Rumour, Plans Special Tribute for Buhari

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday shut down viral social media claims that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states in Nigeria.

Reacting to a point of order raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), Akpabio clarified that although the Constitution Review Committee has received over 42 proposals for state creation, none have advanced through the rigorous legislative process.

“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation. The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance,” he said during plenary.

He warned communities against holding town hall meetings or fundraising activities based on unapproved state creation rumours, urging citizens to rely strictly on official statements from the National Assembly.

In a related development, the Senate announced a special session scheduled for Wednesday to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The tribute will see lawmakers reflect on Buhari’s years of service and his contributions to Nigeria’s development.
