Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed the critical role of traditional rulers in governance, pledging to enhance their influence and improve their welfare in the state’s affairs.
Speaking at the opening of a three-day retreat for the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs, themed “Strengthening Traditional Institutions through Collaboration for Growth and Peaceful Co-Existence in Lagos State,” Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, described monarchs as key partners in fostering peace, unity, and development.
He praised their commitment to preserving cultural heritage, resolving conflicts, and maintaining law and order across communities, describing them as a vital bridge between policy and the people.
“The Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs is a cornerstone in our shared pursuit of growth and harmony. This retreat reflects our continuous partnership,” he noted.
The governor also addressed pressing challenges facing the state, including boundary disputes—especially in Isheri-Olofin—and environmental issues such as flooding. He urged monarchs to support the government’s efforts in tackling these concerns.
The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Kayode Roberts, described traditional rulers as indispensable partners in grassroots governance, while the Lagos House of Assembly’s Committee Chair on Local Government, Stephen Ogundipe, called for stronger cooperation on land-related conflicts.
The Vice Chairman of the Council of Obas and Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Kabiru Shotobi, advocated for quarterly meetings with the state government and a more active advisory role for traditional leaders.
Also lending his voice, the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Gbolahan Lawal, pledged the continued support of monarchs, stating, “Our role in conflict resolution is critical, and if well harnessed, will contribute significantly to the state’s progress.”
