Dutch footballer Quincy Promes has been extradited to the Netherlands to begin serving a combined seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence following convictions for drug trafficking and aggravated assault.
Promes, 33, was arrested in Dubai after Dutch authorities issued a formal request for his extradition. The former Ajax star was flown back to the Netherlands on a chartered flight and has since been taken into custody, according to reports from Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
He was sentenced in absentia earlier this year to six years in prison for his role in smuggling over 1,360 kilograms of cocaine into the Netherlands from Belgium in 2020. That sentence followed an earlier 18-month conviction for stabbing his cousin during a family gathering.
Despite denying the drug charges, the Amsterdam court cited strong evidence, including intercepted phone conversations and witness testimonies, linking Promes to the shipments.
If no further legal challenges overturn the sentences, the earliest Promes could be released, under parole, would be in 2030.
