A serving corps member in Lagos State has raised concerns over threats she received from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) after criticizing President Bola Tinubu in a viral social media post.
The corps member, identified as @talktoraye on TikTok, expressed frustration over the rising cost of living in Nigeria. In an emotional video, she described Tinubu’s administration as “terrible” and questioned the government’s response to inflation.
“If Nigerians speak up about what we are going through, maybe there will be change. I don’t know if there has ever been a president as terrible as you, but you are such a terrible president,” she stated in the video.
She lamented how inflation has made basic necessities unaffordable, citing that a crate of eggs now costs N6,500 compared to N800 in the past. She also complained about increasing electricity bills, security levies, and high transportation costs, making it difficult for her to survive on the NYSC allowance.
The corps member further criticized the poor environmental conditions in Lagos, stating, “Everywhere smells. What is the government doing about this?” She also questioned the effectiveness of the NYSC scheme, claiming her expenses far outweigh her stipend.
Less than 24 hours after posting the video, she shared another clip where she received a call from an NYSC official. The caller reprimanded her, asking, “Are you normal? Keep quiet and take down the video.”
She alleged that several NYSC officials had been calling her, pressuring her to delete the video and stop criticizing the government. Attempts to get a response from NYSC spokesperson Caroline Embu were unsuccessful.
