The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned of intense heat across Gombe and 17 other Northern states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. In a weather outlook released Friday, NiMet projected temperatures as high as 40°C from April 12, likely to cause significant thermal discomfort.
The affected states include Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Gombe, and the FCT.
According to Gayus Musa, the Meteorological Manager for Gombe State, the combination of high temperatures, moisture, and clear skies is expected to intensify the heat, increasing health risks.
“After recent rainfall, clear skies are expected to raise temperatures significantly, resulting in thermal discomfort,” Musa said. He stressed that the extreme heat could lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other health challenges, especially among vulnerable populations.
Residents have been urged to take preventive steps such as:
– Staying indoors or in shaded, ventilated environments
– Wearing light, breathable clothing
– Drinking plenty of water
– Avoiding outdoor activities during peak sun hours (12 p.m. to 3 p.m.)
– Using sun protection like hats and sunscreen
Musa also appealed to the public to check on vulnerable individuals, particularly children and the elderly, who are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
He called on local authorities and health stakeholders to intensify public awareness campaigns on the dangers of heat stress and the importance of hydration and protective measures.
